Very exciting news today…………… our first mainland car has been positioned at Wemyss Bay for all our members to use. It is just the same process that is currently used, simply become a member of Car Bute and book online, for when you come of the ferry, collect the key and drive away. On your return, park the car in the designated parking bays and return the key and board the ferry, as easy as a,b,c or 1,2,3. The world is now your oyster, be one of the first to use the new and exciting service.

Things are really looking hopeful for Car Bute having a third car to be located at Wemyss Bay, this I feel will be a brilliant next step for the car club, but like everything else it will only carry on and be a facility if it is used. So if it issomething that would be of interest to you, please give me a call and we can talk over the details and how it will work. What a great facility……….one that should be used, think of the cost savings and easy access to so many places……the world is your oyster!!

Where we are just now

Realised this morning that I hadn’t updated you all with where Car Bute is now. The 6 month trial ended on 31st March and the results were very encouraging, so much so that Car Bute is now continuing and we are working with members of the local community, community groups and businesses small and large, about becoming members of the club and increasing usage. We just really need to spread the word about how the car club works, how easy it is to use, and how reasonable the rates are.

Really pushing to have one of our Car Bute Cars located at Wemyss Bay. What are your thoughts? This is a community car club, run for the good of the community, and therefore should be based where the community will benefit and use it most. Would you use a car that was based at Wemyss Bay? Please give me your thoughts, either by email to caroline@carbute.org.uk or by facebook for by phone on 07826415122. My thoughts are that it would be great to get to hospitals for appointments without having to take your car over, or relying on the bus, that for inverclyde sometimes doesn’t go up the hill. Great for going to see friends and family on the mainland, great for a wee day out or for shopping, the ideas are endless, and as I say the car club is for YOU to benefit, so let me know what you think and then sign up and drive away.

Car Club Conference – Inverness

I spent three days last week in Inverness, at the Developing Community Car Clubs in Scotland, Conference.

I learned a lot from my time spent there, just emphasising what I have learnt, that Car Clubs play an important part of the local community and how beneficial they are to so many, in some cases being the life line between having access to places and services that would otherwise be outwith their reach or grasp.

Just a wee thought, how many of our readers are one of the 505 holiday homes on the island. How many of you bring your cars over and for the majority of the time, they just sit outside your holiday home or flat. Car Clubs offer access to a vehicle without the hassle and expense of ownership. Cars are parked outside the TZCB offices at 7 Castle Street, and can be booked for as little as an hour by internet or coming into the office. Simply pay our annual membership and a returnable deposit that covers insurance, then all you are left to pay at the end of each month is the cost per hire and mileage rate. In large parts of Scotland the car is often the only practical and convenient transport option. 95% of Scotland is rural in nature and 18% of Scotland’s population live in rural areas where access to essential services may be limited and where walking, cycling and public transport may not always be practical transport options. In this context car clubs can provide rural communities with a practical, low-cost alternative to owning a car.

The key features of a car club:

• Member-based organisations which provide access to pay-as-you-drive vehicles
• Vehicles tend to be parked in reserved parking spaces close to homes and workplaces and tend to be available on an hourly or daily basis
• Vehicles tend to be fuel efficient, low emission vehicles
• Promote behaviour change by complementing other modes of transport such as walking, cycling and public transport
